#OnesToWatch – STEM
It’s been a week of voting and we’re going strong – leaderboards are changing every day, and more societies are entering in many categories. We’ve had 50,000 visitors to theUNIs.co.uk!
To help you decide who you want to vote for, we’re bringing you another instalment of #OnesToWatch.
This time, we wanted to switch it up and cover STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). The winners of this category will get five tickets to Wired LIVE, courtesy of category partners BP, and will have the opportunity to go on to win £5k courtesy of Co-op. Here’s 5 societies you might want to look at:
Tau Racing
Currently in 4th place with just under 1000 votes, the Team Aberdeen University (TAU) Racing Society has one goal each year – to build a single-seat racing car to compete at Silverstone. The society includes students from many backgrounds, from engineering to business. They learn practical manufacturing and engineering skills, as well as project management, team organisation and people skills. They’re also able to collaborate with people outside their faculties, teaching the importance of cross-discipline integration in organisations.
Sheffield Artificial Intelligence Society (SAIS)
At the University of Sheffield, their Artificial Intelligence Society aim to enlighten and educate its members on the importance of the ever-growing field of AI. They host workshops, events, facilitate environments to discuss AI-related concerns, and even help their members find placements and internships in the tech industry. They’re currently 10th on the leaderboard, but you still have time to get them higher!
Manchester Energy and Environment Society
The current leaders with a little under 2000 votes, University of Manchester’s Energy and Environment Society helps its members gain opportunities in the energy and environment sectors, working with companies such as Siemens. They’re also the hosts of the Rethink Energy Conference, which gives students greater insight into new and renewable technologies.
Clinical Genetics
Imperial College London’s Clinical Genetics Society hopes to support students with an interest in genetics by helping them get more involved with this rapidly growing area of medicine. Currently at 7th place, they host many events, talks, tutorials and more on the topic of genetics, aiding to increase links with researchers and students.
Hack Society
A society not in the leaderboard, but as a former computer scientist myself, I thought these guys at the University of Manchester looked particularly cool. They help people who might be joining comp sci, or who are just looking for a challenge, by giving them that start in coding. They collaborate with external companies on events which help students to expand on their knowledge and become limitless.
